What's New in Social Media | Week Eight

Facebook Live

Recently, if you have gone to update your Facebook status via your cellphone, you may have noticed a new feature available to you. Rather than just posting a witty paragraph or a great image, you're now able to post a live video! Just like everything else, this feature took a little bit longer to get to New Zealand, but we have now caught up with the rest of the world and Facebook have produced a handful of tips to help you get the most out of Facebook live.

Twitter's 140 Characters

The latest thing to rock the social media world is the Fact that Twitter has removed both images and handles from the 140 character limit! There's been a lot of chat over recent times that Twitter was going to extend their character limit, with critics claiming that it was going to remove their point of difference from every other social platform. It seems twitter has gotten around this factor by simply allowing you to have more of your own say in your tweet!

Here are the important changes to note from twitter
  • Replies: When replying to a Tweet, @names will no longer count toward the 140-character count. This will make having conversations on Twitter easier and more straightforward, no more penny-pinching your words to ensure they reach the whole group.
  • Media attachments: When you add attachments like photos, GIFs, videos, polls, or Quote Tweets, that media will no longer count as characters within your Tweet. More room for words!
  • Retweet and Quote Tweet yourself: We’ll be enabling the Retweet button on your own Tweets, so you can easily Retweet or Quote Tweet yourself when you want to share a new reflection or feel like a really good one went unnoticed.
  • Goodbye, .@: These changes will help simplify the rules around Tweets that start with a username. New Tweets that begin with a username will reach all your followers. (That means you’ll no longer have to use the ”.@” convention, which people currently use to broadcast Tweets broadly.) If you want a reply to be seen by all your followers, you will be able to Retweet it to signal that you intend for it to be viewed more broadly.

Blogs, on Blogs, on Blogs

So you're setting up your businesses social media platforms and you're trying to establish content for your platforms. You're definitely an expert in your field and you have tips, hints and wisdom to share. As well as an exciting and progressive business environment? What's the best way to get that story to your clients and customers? Blogs of course!

So if you're stressing out and trying to back peddle because you don't consider yourself as much of a writer, never fear because there's people out there who aren't readers!

The magic thing about blogs is you have so many different styles of media to work with! If you're handy with a camera then a photo blog with captions is really engaging and easily relatable with people. Make sure your photos are relevant and that you can't be pulled up on anything laying around in the background from health and safety risks to your most vital business secrets!

Building on your visual options, you can also move into video.. Audio visual media is a bit more tricky to get right because you need to be able to get a few key elements just right. But you can say a lot with a 30 second video that you can't with 500 words of text. So have a play! It may just be a matter of trial and error. There's people who have become exceptionally successful just through posting videos to Youtube.. It's 2016.. Anything is possible...

Lastly there's Podcasts, pure audio filling the earholes of your audience. These also might just be worth trialling and seeing what the response is like. Ensure you have a good standard of professionalism and sound and you're half way there!

As a final note, if nothing else try your best to figure out your "vibe" or your angle. Everyone has a style, so try your best to make sure that comes through in whatever it is that you publish.
