What's New in Social Media | Week Forty Nine

Snapchat Updates!

To be honest, the biggest user of Snapchat in my family is Miss Five when she takes some super close up selfies and send them to her Nana, Grandad, Her aunties, uncles and my friends (sorry guys)!

Some people though do a really excellent job at utilising Snapchat in their business marketing - this is where it would be good to note that there have been some updates (read on below) recently so it may be time to be a little more careful around what you are sending to who!

Some recent stats have been released too. With 300+ million monthly active users and 18% of Americans using it - I'm actually a little surprised by the small numbers and I personally think that Snapchat is largely on the way down and out - Especially judging by it's financial statistics!

They are still trying though! New features added recently include video looping and non-expiring images.

'We’ve all felt the frustration of not being able to fully enjoy a Snap – even after replaying it – and we wanted to give you the option of allowing the recipient to enjoy your Snap as long as they’d like. After your friend finishes viewing the Snap and taps to close it, it will delete as usual.'

Chatbots

Have you heard this term yet? Artificial Intelligence in the form of instant replies by techno robots created by individuals or alongside existing companies.

You may have noticed the ad on TV recently about Dominos Pizza new ordering system through Facebook messenger? It looks to be working well so far and is leading the way. The company is often on top of its game when it comes to rethinking the order process - leaving other food delivery competitors yet to have a slice. There has been the beginning of Domino's drone delivery success, which has started delivering pizzas to a limited group of customers in New Zealand. There have also been signs of testing a pizza delivery robot, an autonomous vehicle capable of carrying an order right up to a customer's door!?

This is just a small example of the beginning of this phenomenon. Another prime example of how this work is Apples, Siri! Can you even begin to imagine where this will go next!?

Twitter-like-Facebook

Facebook is rolling out a new feature called “Latest Conversations” in its search results that will show the most recent public posts about timely topics that a lot of people across its network are discussing. The unit gives you a wider view of what people are saying about a news story or other subject by exposing you to sentiments being expressed outside your social circle.

The ability to see public posts is not necessarily a new thing for Facebook, but this “Latest Conversations” unit is different from what was available previously. Before, when doing a broad keyword-based search on Facebook, the main search results page would display a mix of news articles, photos, videos, public posts, pages, groups and apps (if applicable) associated with the search term.

“Latest Conversations,” however, appears as its own section within the search results and includes a running — and live-updating! — counter showing how many people are talking about the topic right now!

I guess it's things like this that make drastic new features all that more exciting ;)
